Young Dracula Title Screen

Children's comedy drama series about a young vampire

The series begins with Count Dracula, his son Vladimir, his daughter Ingrid and their servant Renfield, arriving at their new castle in Wales. They were chased out of their native Transylvania by an "angry peasant mob" and the castle, although ruined was the best they could find at short notice.

Vlad and Robin

Although Count Dracula is a proper vampire, his children will not become vampires until they are 16 years old. Vladimir does not want to be a vampire. In fact, he does not want to be evil at all. He just wants to be a normal 13 year old kid. Ingrid, on the other hand, is the complete opposite. She is just as evil as her father, and is constantly exasperated by the fact that Vladimir gets all the attention.

The Count often tells Vladimir off for not being evil enough. At the same time, he ignores Ingrid's evilness because he claims that she is just a girl, much to her annoyment. The Count does not like his children mixing with normal people, whom he calls "breathers" or "peasants". However, he lets them go to school so as not to attract any attention to himself.

Van Helsing and Jonathan

Vlad then makes friends with Robin Branagh (a boy in his class who is obsessed with vampires), and Robin's younger sister, Chloe. Robin and Chloe's parents are the opposite of the Count. They are unnaturally cheerful and polite. Whenever, the Count has to deal with them he is always sickened by their happiness.

Vlad and Robin's woodwork teacher, Mr Van Helsing is a vampire slayer, and regularly tries to expose the Dracula family as being vampires. His son Jonathan thinks his father is mad, but always gets caught up in his schemes.

Young Dracula was inspired by, but not directly based on the book of the same name by Michael Lawrence. The series was created by Danny Robins and Dan Tetsell. It was made by the BBC and broadcast on BBC 1 in 2006.
