Children's educational programme designed to integrate reading exercises into stories that capture children's imagination Look and Read began in the late 1960's on the BBC, and still forms an essential part of the BBC's schools programming output. The programme is characterised by the stories that capture the interest of children very quickly, and educational segments that relate to the story that the children have been watching. For a large part of Look and Read's run, the educational parts were presented by a character called Wordy, who was orange and had letters of the alphabet all over him. Wordy was a puppet and his voice was provided by Charles Collingwood. In every series hat Wordy appeared, he had a human co-presenter and presented from a different location. For example, in "The King's Dragon" (1977) Wordy appeared in a newspaper office; in "The Boy from Space" (1980), Wordy presented from a space ship, and in "Geordie Racer" (1988) Wordy was in a radio studio. Look and Read is currently broadcast on BBC Two and the CBBC Channel. It is made by the BBC. |
