Newsround Title Screen

Children's daily news programme

Newsround started on the BBC on 4 April 1972. The idea for Newsround came from Edward Barnes, who was the deputy head of children's programmes at the time. The first presenter of the programme was John Craven, and the programme was known as John Craven's Newsround.

John Craven chose to sit on the desk rather than behind it because he did not want the children to see him as a kind of teacher figure. The programme quickly became well known as a news programme that explained things in a way that was accessible to children. Long-running issues were not only reported, but also explained with key background information, so children could get an idea of what the report meant in wider terms.

In 1975, Newsround Extra was launched. This was a weekly current affairs programme that covered more wide-ranging issues than the daily bulletin. Newsround Extra is still going today.

Initially, the content for the programme was sourced from the main BBC newsgathering service, and the reports were done by reporters who worked for the main BBC news programme. As the years went on, Newsround became a news service in its own right, and dedicated reporters started working for the show.

In 1986 other presenters started to join John Craven. The first co-presenters were Roger Finn and Helen Rollason. Also in this year, the Newsround logo was given an update. It consisted of the letters of the word "NEWSROUND" appearing on yellow blocks. In 1988, for the first time, Newsround featured report made by children. This was so successful that the "Newsround Newshound Club" was formed. This was renamed the Press Pack in 1992. In 1989 John Craven left the programme after 17 years presenting the show.

In 1991 Helen Rollason and Roger Finn left the programme. They were replaced by Krishnan Guru-Murthy and Juilet Morris. The titles were changed into an image of a satellite orbiting the Earth. In 1994 the presenters changed again. The new presenters this time were Chris Rogers and Julie Etchingham. The programme was given a completely new multicoloured look, and the titles, logo and theme tune changed once again.

In 1997 Kate Sanderson joined the Newsround team. Chris Rogers and Julie Etchingham carried on. The look of the programme was changed again. The new logo consisted of the the letters "Nr" with the "r" the same height as the "N". Lizo Mzimba joined, and Julie Etchingham left Newsround in 1998. Chris Rogers left in 1999.

In 2002 Newsround was given its current look, with a logo that combines the lowercase letters "nr". The programme now has a ticker tape at the bottom of the screen that gives the viewers extra content about the stories being covered. The change was made to coincide with the launch of the digital CBBC channel. Becky Jago also joined the programme this year.

The current team is Lizo Mzimba, Laura Jones (joined Dec 2002) and Ellie Crisell (joined Feb 2003).
